Monthly Meeting of the Congregation – Recording

Our monthly General Meeting of the Congregation met this past Friday night with Brother Jayananda.

The recording begins about 18 minutes after the meeting began.

A New Temple – A New Name!

Bay Area Temple of Self-Realization Fellowship

Brother Chidananda expressed the need for the name to be inclusive for members through-out the Bay Area and the location to be identifiable by those living elsewhere.

This marks another step forward in our eventual move to our long-awaited and long-sought-for permanent home.

Renovations have begun in certain areas within the temple grounds, but due to Covid 19 regulations, we are restricted from having large groups of volunteers/workers. Mother Center is overseeing the work timeline in accordance to the ever-changing precautions as the pandemic continues.

Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of
Paramahansa Yogananda’s Arrival in the West

Saturday, September 19th, 2020

Watch the special livestreamed Centennial Commemoration marking the actual date when Paramahansa Yogananda first arrived in the West from his native India, setting foot on American soil in Boston, Massachusetts, on September 19, 1920. In that same year he would found his society, Self-Realization Fellowship, to disseminate his Kriya Yoga teachings. He would later come to be known as the ‘father of Yoga in the West,’ introducing millions of truth seekers to the timeless science of Kriya Yoga.

  • The livestream took place Saturday, September 19 and included:
A ceremony conducted by Self-Realization Fellowship monks and nuns at Piers Park — where the steamship The City of Sparta carrying the young swami sailed into Boston’s Harbor exactly 100 years ago.
  •    Followed by a special talk from the Self-Realization Fellowship International Headquarters in Los Angeles by Brother Chidananda, president and spiritual head of Self-Realization Fellowship.

The Science of Religion — SRF Centennial Edition

Since its first publication, this book has been introducing readers to the profound understanding that Yogananda brought to the West from India — a concept that is ancient yet entirely suited for our modern age — that the purpose of life is to permanently remove suffering and to know oneself as Spirit, “the fountainhead of Bliss.”

In clear, simple language, Yogananda describes how Yoga — India’s universal science of the soul — can lead anyone to experience that Bliss for themselves.

Brother Chidananda SRF/YSS President

June 05, 2020

Speaking to the current situation in America and around the world, Brother Chidananda discusses the serious problem of racial injustice and divisiveness, and the way to address not only the symptoms but the cause of this disease facing humanity.

He encourages those who meditate to be true peacemakers by producing peace first within themselves, through meditation, and then radiating that peace to others through spiritual actions that address the deep-rooted racial prejudices in our society.

“Cultivating Spiritual Enthusiasm” by SRF Brother Sattvananda

SRF monk Brother Sattvananda explains that enthusiasm—the ability to motivate ourselves and feel joy in whatever we are doing—is not only important in every aspect of life, but especially in order to achieve our highest spiritual goal of communion with God.
He shares Paramahansa Yogananda’s ideas on how to cultivate spiritual enthusiasm and understand the relationship between will power and maintaining enthusiasm in all our pursuits.

With a deep sense of understanding of the trials we all face as we strive to grow spiritually, Brother Sattvananda encourages us to be regular in our spiritual practices—and to keep reminding ourselves of the daily blessings that come from meditation—in order to infuse our lives with divine enthusiasm.

In divine friendship,

“A Promise of Light” by Sri Daya Mata

This talk by Sri Daya Mata (SRF/YSS president from 1955 until her passing in 2010) was given at the 1993 SRF World Convocation in Los Angeles as part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Paramahansa Yogananda’s birth. We are sharing it now because her message resonates with special relevance in this centennial year of Self-Realization Fellowship, as well as being deeply meaningful in these times of world crisis.

In her talk Daya Mata explains that Paramahansaji was sent to the West to address humanity’s hunger for direct personal experience of God.

She provides insight into the deep underlying reasons for the current difficulties in the world situation, along with uplifting counsel to help us to connect with the Inner Source of security and reassurance.
